I don’t know about you, but I really miss the convention scene. I love going to events so much that I set up the Ontario Miniatures Conventions Page to share that love with others and to encourage gaming in my local community. Sadly, organizers cancelled most of these events because of the outbreak of COVID-19. Most of them found themselves to cancel these events whether they wanted to or not. While the area where I live is starting to open up again, I have no idea how long it will take for these events to come back. Fortunately groups like the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society (HMGS) plan to take these events to the virtual world. From Thursday July 23 to Sunday, July 26th (2020), HMGS is running a virtual convention called Cyber Wars.
Absolutely Free!!!
Cyber Wars caught my eye as soon as some friends and readers told me about the event.
When I started researching the event, I found out that the entire event is free! That shocked me, but also made me happy. Here we have a group just wanting to spread their love of miniature gaming, and I can get completely behind that!
The Round Table
From Thursday night right up until Sunday night Cyber Wars hosts a number of discussions with various groups and companies. Looking at the 20 talks currently lined up, I see…
- Firelock Games to discuss their upcoming releases
- Firelock Games with a second booking to talk about their second Blood and Valor Book
- Plastic Soldier Company talking about their upcoming releases
- Warlord Games talking about their upcoming releases
- A special speaker about Solo Gaming
- Various other speakers about clubs, historical topics and the releases of other companies
Keep in mind that Cyber Wars booked twenty different discussions. This means that my list is just a small sampling of what is available. I already signed up for three of the discussions, and might go back to sign up for more.
Again, the price on all of these talks is free!!! You have to register, but I found the process fairly painless. Check out the Cyber Wars web page if any of these topics interest you.
Virtual Games
If you like participation games like me, this might be right up your alley. In addition to gaming industry talks, the folks at Cyber Wars set up a number of participation games that you can take a part in virtually. The platform used differs by the game demoed. I am guessing the selection was based on what is easiest for the host. Some are on Tabletop Simulator, some are on Skype and some are on Discord. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more, but the games I looked at were on those platforms.
The games run Friday to Sunday and are also free for you to sign up.
Rather than listing all the games here, you can head to the Cyber Wars website for the list of games and details on how to sign up.
Wrapping it up…
If you are looking for something to do this coming weekend (Thursday July 23 to Sunday, July 26th – 2020), hopefully this post helps fill your time. I will be checking the event out myself with a focus on news and upcoming releases simply because of this website.
How about you, do you plan to attend Cyber Wars now?
Before you go, I want to mention that there is even more to the event! If you head to their Facebook Page, you will see other features that I did not touch on. This includes a virtual vendor hall, a virtual “Wally’s Basement” shop (for users to post their EBay and other third party sales links), a virtual hobby night, and more. It is certainly worth checking out.
Until next time, Happy Gaming Everyone!!!
